Kicking your shoes off and walking on grass might feel like a small, simple pleasure. But a growing body of research suggests that direct physical contact with the earth, known as grounding or earthing, has measurable effects on inflammation, cortisol rhythm, and sleep quality. And because those three things are deeply woven into the fabric of your menstrual cycle, grounding is worth paying serious attention to.
This is not about crystals or mystical energy. This is about electrons, electrical charge, and your body's response to contact with the earth's surface. Here is what we actually know, and how to use it strategically across your four cycle phases.
What is grounding, and what does the science say?
Grounding, also called earthing, is the practice of making direct skin contact with the earth's surface, whether through bare feet on grass, sand, or soil, or via conductive grounding mats indoors. Research shows it can reduce inflammation markers, lower cortisol, improve sleep, and shift the autonomic nervous system toward a calmer, more parasympathetic state.
The mechanism is rooted in physics. The earth carries a mild negative electrical charge and is a rich source of free electrons. When you walk barefoot on a conductive surface, those electrons transfer into your body. The hypothesis, supported by several peer-reviewed studies, is that these electrons act as natural antioxidants, neutralising free radicals and dampening the inflammatory response.
A landmark study published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health found that earthing during sleep reduced cortisol levels and normalised the diurnal cortisol profile in study participants. Chevalier et al. How does grounding affect cortisol, and why does that matter for your cycle?
Cortisol is your primary stress hormone and it has a direct, suppressive effect on progesterone. When cortisol is chronically elevated, it competes with progesterone for the same receptor sites, a phenomenon sometimes called "cortisol steal." Grounding's ability to normalise cortisol rhythm can therefore protect hormone balance across your entire cycle.

Does grounding reduce inflammation linked to period pain?
Yes, and this is one of the most compelling reasons for women with painful periods to try grounding. Dysmenorrhoea (painful periods) is driven significantly by prostaglandin-mediated inflammation. Research shows grounding reduces markers of systemic inflammation, including white blood cell counts and inflammatory cytokines, which could translate to less severe cramping.

How does grounding affect sleep quality across your cycle?
Grounding improves sleep by synchronising the body's circadian rhythm with the earth's natural electrical field, reducing cortisol at night and increasing melatonin-friendly parasympathetic activity. Sleep quality varies across your cycle, and grounding can act as a stabilising influence, particularly in the luteal phase when sleep is most disrupted.
In the late luteal phase, progesterone and oestrogen both drop sharply. This hormonal withdrawal disrupts sleep architecture, reduces total sleep time, and increases night waking. During menstruation, inflammation is at its peak in the uterine lining. Grounding's anti-inflammatory action makes it particularly valuable now. Try a slow, barefoot walk on grass in the morning, even for 10-15 minutes. The calming parasympathetic effect can also ease cramping by reducing prostaglandin-driven muscle tension.
Follicular phase (days 6-13)
Rising oestrogen gives you more energy and resilience during this phase. Grounding in the morning can support your cortisol awakening response, helping that peak feel clean and energising rather than anxious. This is a great phase to make barefoot morning walks a habit, cementing the practice before the luteal phase arrives.
Ovulatory phase (days 14-16)
Oestrogen and LH surge around ovulation, and many women feel their best. Grounding here supports the nervous system and keeps inflammation low during the brief but intense hormonal peak. A barefoot walk or outdoor yoga session is ideal.
Luteal phase (days 17-28)
This is where grounding earns its keep most. Rising and then falling progesterone, increasing cortisol sensitivity, and disrupted sleep all make this phase challenging. Rubber-soled shoes, asphalt, and wood flooring are insulators and break the circuit. Grounding mats with a proper earthing connection are a valid indoor alternative.
A common mistake is thinking that being outdoors is enough. If you are wearing trainers on grass, you are not grounding. The electron transfer requires skin contact. Even standing or sitting on bare earth with your hands qualifies, so a park bench moment with your feet flat on grass absolutely counts.
Grounding mats and sheets are increasingly popular for people in urban environments or northern climates. These plug into the ground port of a standard socket and replicate the electron transfer indoors. While the evidence base for mats is smaller than for outdoor grounding, the few studies that exist show comparable effects on cortisol and inflammation markers.
How much grounding do you actually need?
The existing research suggests benefits begin with as little as 20-30 minutes of daily grounding. More consistent daily contact appears to produce stronger and more sustained effects, particularly on cortisol normalisation and sleep. You do not need hours; you need regularity.
The Chevalier 2012 study used overnight grounding mats for eight weeks to achieve cortisol normalisation. But other studies showing reduced inflammation and improved heart rate variability used single sessions of 20 to 40 minutes. For most women, a daily 20-minute barefoot walk or an evening grounding mat session is a realistic and evidence-supported target.

If you use a grounding mat, always buy from a reputable manufacturer that uses a resistor-protected cord, which prevents any risk from wiring faults. The mat should connect only to the ground (earth) port, not to the live or neutral circuit.
There is one important consideration for women taking blood-thinning medication. A 2015 case study in the grounding literature noted that grounding can reduce blood viscosity. If you are on anticoagulant therapy, consult your doctor before beginning regular grounding practice.
